First time in History of KC Law College, A Jain Monk led a Landmark Conference on the ‘Concept of Basic Structure Doctrine in the Contemporary Era’
Mumbai : Jyot, in partnership with KC Law College, organized a discourse by His Holiness Spiritual Sovereign Jainacharya Yugbhushan Suri, the 79th successor of Tirthankar Mahavir, on the nuanced legal concept of the ‘Concept of Basic Structure Doctrine in the Contemporary Era’. It was an event of unique confluence of ancient spiritual wisdom, legal minds, and aspiring legal students. The chief guest of the event was Mr. M. L. Tahaliyani, the former Lokayukta of Maharashtra and retired Judge of the Bombay High Court.
While stating the importance of Basic Structure, His Holiness said that Absolute sovereignty of Parliament is and was never in the interest of Humanity. Ancient scriptures denounced it and it was never practiced in Ancient India. Absolute sovereignty should not be created, propagated and implemented. Chief guest Justice M.L. Tahaliyani said, “For the first time I have seen a Spiritual leader speaking on Basic Structure which is a complex aspect of Indian Constitutional law.”
A law student of the college said that “The session and exhibition was an eyeopener with in depth analysis of Basic Structure with respect to democracy.” An experienced Advocate from Bombay High Court said, “His Holiness raised a very fundamental question pointing on nature of Indian democracy as part of Basic Structure. The question is, whether the constitution of India, as framed, is democractically democratic or undemocratically democratic?”
The event was also graced by guests such as Hon’ble Adv. Harihar P. Chaturvedi, Member (Judicial), Additional Secretary, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India, and Former HOD at NCLT, Ahmedabad Bench; Mr. Rajan Jaykar, Solicitor and Advocate; Mr.Yogendra Rajgor, Advocate, Bombay High Court and many more.
The event was part of an outreach effort by Jyot to disseminate outcomes from the previous three conclaves of its flagship conclave series ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Ki Oar’, whose outcomes have reached the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and 23 embassies of the Global South. Jyot is on a spree to organize such events in educational institutions across Mumbai to educate youth on the nuances of the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, aiming to foster the future world order based on that philosophy which would be free, fair and just.
Jyot also organized one such event on 13th February, in partnership with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), on ‘The Root Cause of Discrimination in the Current World Order’. It is scheduled to organize the next event in partnership with Mumbai University and Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan’s Hazarimal Somani College of Arts, Commerce, and Science on 11th March, on ‘The Root Cause of Discrimination in the Current World Order – A Holistic Approach through Indian Knowledge System’. The exhibition-cum-conference will be held from 9 am to 12 noon at Mackichan Hall, opposite Bhavan’s College.
