New Delhi: The conflict in Ukraine is a global standoff between Russia and the West, rather than a conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik said on Thursday.

“Russia could not shrug off the fact that lethal weapons may be deployed” so that it could hit targets in its territory in a two-minute time “as means of pressure” over Siberia’s natural resources, Dodik, the Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina said, addressing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“The armed conflict is therefore not a conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it is a standoff of global powers,” he said.

On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. The invasion caused Europe’s fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 7.5 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories, and the goal was to demilitarize and denazify the country. Vladimir Putin said that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation.
