NEW DELHI, Jan 17: The Union government has completed a survey of 67,000 sq km of rural land worth ₹132 lakh crore, the Panchayati Raj Department said on Friday.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute property cards to 65 lakh land owners spread across ten States on Saturday. The Panchayati Raj Department started the survey using drones which have an accuracy up to five centimetres. So far, 92% of the drone mapping has been completed, covering around 3.17 lakh villages. The scheme’s target, to cover more than 3.44 lakh villages, is likely to be achieved by 2026, the Department said.

So far, 31 States and Union Territories have on-boarded the scheme. Of these, Sikkim, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu participated only in the pilot phase. The State governments of Telangana and Bihar have their own version of this scheme.

Mr Modi will virtually connect and interact with select beneficiaries on Saturday. Across the country, 13 Union Ministers are expected to meet the beneficiaries in person to oversee the regional ceremonies to distribute the property cards. The scheme was launched in April 2020 and the first round of property cards were distributed by Mr Modi in October 2020.

Surveying the rural properties is aimed at helping the landowners to monetise their land parcels. The property cards will be admissible in banks if land owners apply for loans. It is also expected to resolve long-standing land disputes and provide clarity on the quantum of land available with panchayats, which can be used to raise money by leasing it out or to build infrastructure such as community halls and panchayat bhawans.

The Prime Minister was originally scheduled to distribute the cards on December 26, but the event was postponed due to national mourning following the former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s death.
