BSE: Sensex plunges 1,200 points, Nifty50 slips below 15,900
Mumbai: Domestic equity market benchmarks BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 tumbled nearly 2 percent on Thursday, a day of weekly F&O expiry, following heavy losses on Wall Street overnight. BSE Sensex tumbled 1,154 points, giving up 54000 level to trade at 53,053, while the Nifty 50 index plunged over 300 points, giving up 16000.
The broader markets were also weak in line with frontline indices. The India VIX surged 9% to 24 levels indicating high nervousness among investors. Markets are likely to remain highly volatile in upcoming weeks, said analysts.
Manappuram Fin is the top loser of the day down by 10.00%, while MPhasiS, and Lupin Trent is down by 6.62%, 6.14%, and 6.00% respectively.
Earlier in the session, the indices had each risen 0.86 percent.
Hindalco Industries, a manufacturer of aluminum and copper, and Infosys, a software services provider, were the biggest percentage drops in the Nifty 50, plunging 3.7 percent each.
