New Delhi: Romanian Tennis player Simona Halep defeated Polish player Magdalena Frech in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the Women’s Singles Round One of the Australia Open 2022 at the Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne Park, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
The former World No. 1 took control of the rallies and made an early breakpoint. Halep and Frech struggled to hold serves in the opening set. Frech broke the serves thrice, whereas Halep broke twice. Halep smashed a signature backhand despite several service errors and sealed the serve with scores 6-4.
The second set began with continued service errors from both ends. However, Frech took the lead and won 3 consecutive points against Halep 3-1. Halep found her momentum, scored 5 consecutive points, and ousted the Polish player 6-3. Halep will face American player Katie Volynets or Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Mia in round two.
Meanwhile, Andy Murray defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 3-2, and Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 3-2 in the Men’s singles round one of the Australia Open 2022 at Melbourne Park on Tuesday. Murray and Felix will progress to the next round.
