Mumbai: Noted filmmakers Karan Johar and Asif Kapadia have been honored with the Icon Awards 2021 at the London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) for their contributions to the film industry.
The Festival, organized in digital and physical format under the sponsorship of Bagri Foundation and the British Film Institute (BFI) amidst the ongoing pandemic-induced restrictions, opened with Ajit Sharma’s audience award-winning documentary, Women of My Billion (WOMB).
Karan Johar is an Indian filmmaker and founder of Dharma Productions, while Asif Kapadia is a director who won an Oscar for his documentary on British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.
They were among those to receive Icon awards at the closing ceremony of the Festival last week.
According to LIFF Executive and Programming Director Cary Rajinder Sawhney, “We have been able to pull off this dynamic festival online and in cinemas owing to a strong team. We also thank the cinemas for finding innovative marketing strategies to attract audiences.”
Johar recently announced an upcoming project based on an Indian lawyer and politician. He took to Instagram and wrote, “So thrilled and proud to present the unheard story of a historical figure, C Sankaran Nair, on the big screen.
“The film will be directed by Karan Singh Tyagi. Information related to the film and cast will be shared soon.”
LIFF gave Outstanding Achievement Awards to Bollywood actors Shruti Haasan and Janhvi Kapoor.
