NEW DELHI, Dec 28: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an unscheduled short visit to Ahmedabad on Wednesday to call on his ailing mother who was admitted in the hospital on Tuesday night with cardiac problems.
Having flown in from Delhi around 4 pm, he left the hospital just before 5.30, spending over an hour with his mother. A statement from the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre said condition of 99-year old Heeraben Modi was “stable.”
“UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, Ahmedabad hospital’s spokesperson hereby informing that Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Mother is admitted at UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, Ahmedabad & her health condition is stable,” a health bulletin issued by the hospital on Wednesday evening said.
The Prime Minister, who has often spoken of his bond with his mother, had last seen her on December 4 when he came to cast his vote in the Gujarat Assembly elections. The Prime Minister had also visited her on her 99th birthday in June. To mark her centenary entry, the Prime Minister had also written an emotional blog titled ‘Mother’.
The news of Heeraben Modi’s hospitalisation comes shortly after the Prime Minister’s brother Prahlad Modi and other family members were injured in a car accident at Mysuru in Karnataka.
Just before Modi’s arrival, the Ahmedabad police Commissioner Sanjay Shrivastava issued a notification banning the flying of drones and other aircraft. Shrivastava imposed the ban on flying remote-controlled drones, quadcopters, powered aircraft, microlight aircraft, hang gliders paragliders, para motors, hot air balloons and para jumping citing security reasons. The ban has been enforced from 2 pm till midnight.
The Gujarat government also put off the weekly cabinet briefing that was to be held by its spokesperson and Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, who rushed to the U N Mehta Hospital. The Gujarat Chief minister Bhupendra Patel also reached the hospital before Modi’s arrival. The state BJP chief CR Paatil and the state chief principal secretary were also seen arriving at the hospital in the afternoon.
Heeraben lives with her youngest son Pankaj, a retired Gujarat government official, at Raisan in Gandhinagar district.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared good wishes for Modi’s mother. “The love between a mother and son is eternal and priceless. Modi ji, you have my love and support in this difficult time. I hope your mother gets well soon,” Mr Gandhi tweeted in Hindi for the prime minister.
