New Delhi: After a gap of 12 years, the Joint Rivers Commission of Bangladesh and India held its 38th meeting at the ministerial level here on Thursday.
Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat led the India group, while Zaheed Farooque, the State Minister for Water Resources in Bangladesh, headed his country’s team.
During the last 12 years, the technical exchanges between the two countries have continued within the JRC framework.
Altogether 54 rivers run between India and Bangladesh, seven of which have already been chosen as the priority for a framework for water-sharing agreements. Eight more rivers are now being added for data-sharing.
The two neighbors established the JRC in 1972 to resolve concerns on shared borders and transboundary rivers of mutual interest.
