Heatwave intensifies across TN; temperature crosses 38 degrees in many districts
New Delhi: With the peak summer season setting in, Tamil Nadu is experiencing a steady rise in temperatures, with several districts reporting extreme heat. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), at least 13 locations recorded temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius on April 28, pointing to intensifying heatwave conditions.
Tiruchirappalli emerged as the hottest location, with the temperature reaching 40.5 degrees Celsius. Other districts also faced severe heat, including Vellore and Erode at 39.4 degrees Celsius. High temperatures were also recorded in Karur Paramathi, Chennai’s Meenambakkam observatory, and Madurai airport, each nearing 38.9 degrees Celsius.
Several other regions, including Tirupattur and Dharmapuri, recorded around 38.3 degrees Celsius, while Salem, Thanjavur, Madurai city, Tiruttani, and Namakkal saw temperatures close to 37.8 degrees Celsius, indicating widespread heat stress across the state.
Meteorological officials have cautioned that temperatures may rise further in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase of up to 3 degrees Celsius across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry by Saturday, driven by dry weather conditions and strong solar radiation typical of late April.
High humidity levels, especially in coastal areas, are expected to worsen discomfort, pushing “feels-like” temperatures higher and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke.
Chennai, in particular, is expected to face harsh heat conditions, with temperatures expected to exceed 39 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and limit outdoor activities.
Health officials have also urged vulnerable groups—including the elderly, children, and individuals with existing health conditions—to take extra precautions as the heatwave persists.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and may issue further advisories if conditions intensify.
