New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday emphasised the importance of inclusive and value-based education, stating that learning should extend beyond employment and contribute to social responsibility, character-building, and nation-building.

Addressing students at the annual day ceremony of University of Delhi’s (DU) Kirori Mal College, LS Speaker Birla said education must align with the nation’s broader vision and ensure development reaches the last person in society. He urged students to actively participate in democracy, noting that true progress is meaningful only when it is inclusive.

Highlighting reforms in the sector, he said the National Education Policy 2020 is ushering in transformative change by promoting critical thinking and academic flexibility. However, he stressed that knowledge and skills must be supported by strong moral values, integrity, and perseverance.

LS Speaker Birla also underscored the role of teachers as “architects of society” who shape responsible and aware citizens. He praised Kirori Mal College for its inclusive initiatives, particularly efforts to empower visually impaired students through technology and skill development, calling it a step towards equitable education.

Earlier, speaking at the annual day event of DU’s Maharaja Agrasen College, he encouraged students to contribute actively to the country’s democratic and developmental journey. He said the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047” can be achieved through the innovation, commitment, and youth participation.

Describing India’s youth as confident and globally competitive, LS Speaker Birla highlighted their growing role in innovation, research, and entrepreneurship. He urged students to dream big, work hard, and contribute to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, adding that greater youth participation in governance would strengthen democratic institutions.

He also paid tribute to the legacy of Maharaja Agrasen, noting his governance model based on equality and social harmony. Referring to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Birla said his leadership continues to inspire India’s constitutional and administrative framework.

Later, while addressing students at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Birla highlighted the importance of innovation, original thinking, and technology in a rapidly evolving world.

He described “Viksit Bharat 2047” as a collective national vision to transform India into a developed, inclusive, and self-reliant nation by the centenary of Independence, while commending students for their achievements and discipline.
