New Delhi, March 21: The world poetry day, which is observed every year on the date of March 21 in the whole world, is celebrated this year too with the theme “always be a poet, even in prose.”

The day is observed to appreciate the beauty of poetry and the power it contains, as just two to three lines of poetry can make people feel the deepest of emotions. The world poetry day also gives as an opportunity to admire the creations that are made in literature in the form of poems and a chance to cherish them.

World Poetry Day was established in 1999 by the United Nations educational, scientific, and cultural organization (UNESCO) at its 30th general conference in Paris with an aim to promote linguistic diversity through the expression of poems, which will help endangered languages to be heard again. And as per the conference, March 21 is celebrated as “World Poetry Day.

Before that, in the 20th century, October 15th was chosen to be observed as “poetry day” by the world community on the birthday of the Roman epic poet named Virgil and till now in many countries the day is still observed in October or on the third Sunday in October.

In many institutions and organizations, the day is celebrated by conducting a workshop, writing, reading, performing, holding competitions, and also hosting an online poetry event. Many poets publish their books, as the day is marked by the publication of a new poetry collection.

Poetry is a lovely medium of expression that conveys feelings and emotion over different events and situations more than any other genre of literature; this year, in 2023 too, it was celebrated to honour and protect the treasure of the art of literature.
