Mumbai:The Great Indian Kitchen, a critically praised Malayalam film, will be remade in Hindi.
In the Hindi version, which will be directed by AratiKadav of Cargo fame, Harman Baweja will portray the male protagonist. Harman stated in a statement regarding the remake – “There is a certain mystic quality attached to The Great Indian Kitchen. The story stays with you well after the film. I wanted to make it for a pan-India audience with the perfect balance between entertainment and content-driven drama. I am super excited to collaborate with Sanya&Arati.”
The Great Indian Kitchen, written and directed by Joe Baby, had a discreet OTT release last year. However, the picture became a nationwide sensation soon after its debut. The film depicts how generations of women toiled tirelessly in the kitchen under the patriarchy’s watchful eye. Joe Baby cleverly uses the camera to depict the truth, unfairness, and oppression meted out to a newlywed woman in her husband’s house, with no words. Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu played the wife and husband, respectively, in the film.
In addition, a Tamil version of The Great Indian Kitchen is in the works. R Kannan directed the Tamil adaptation, which stars Aishwarya Rajesh and Rahul Ravindran in the key roles. Meanwhile, Harman Baweja makes his comeback in the Hindi adaptation after an eight-year absence and he was most recently seen in the 2014 film Dishkiyaoon.
