New Delhi, July 25: Italian youngster Jannik Sinner has pulled out from the Olympic Games 2024, commencing in Paris on Friday, after suffering from tonsillitis, the media reported on Thursday.

Earlier in July, he struggled with illness during his Wimbledon quarter-final loss to Russian Daniil Medvedev. “After a good week of clay training, I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and, during a visit, the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing,” he wrote on his X account.

Sinner,22, who reached the semi-finals at the French Open in June, was one of the favourites for the gold medal in the Paris Games as both the French Open and Olympics take place at Roland Garros.

Sinner was due to play men’s singles and doubles alongside with his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti. He will now be replaced by his compatriot Andrea Vavassori who is world no.207.

Many other tennis players like Holger Rune, Marketa Vondrousova, Emma Raducanu, and Aryna Sabalenka have also pulled out from the Olympics because of injuries and illness. The tennis tournament during the Olympic Games in Paris will take place from July 27 to August 4.
