New Delhi: Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday submitted his resignation from the post following his party’s debacle in the recently held assembly elections. His resignation comes a day after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi asked the PCC presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa, and Manipur to put in their resignations in order to facilitate the reorganization of the party.
“As desired by the Congress President I have sent my resignation,” he wrote on Twitter with a copy of his letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi.
Sidhu remained the top trend on Twitter on Wednesday after his shock move of resigning as the Punjab Congress chief. After the news broke, even as social media users came up with one-lines and memes to express their surprise, many criticized the Congress leadership.
The state of Punjab, previously under Congress rule, had seen massive infighting between Navjot Singh Sidhu and then CM Capt Amarinder Singh, who was later replaced with Charanjit Singh Channi.
“We have made mistakes in Punjab. People did not like the internal battle of Congress. Everyone fights elections together and everyone participates. If there is politics in the name of polarization, casteism, and religion then such results will come. Don’t panic, the final victory will be of truth,” Gehlot had earlier media.
