New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings on National Technology Day, recalling the dedication and hard work of Indian scientists that led to the successful Pokhran nuclear tests in 1998.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Greetings on National Technology Day. We recall with pride the hard work and dedication of our scientists, which led to the successful tests in Pokhran in 1998. That landmark moment reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment.”
“Technology has become a key pillar in building a self-reliant India. It is accelerating innovation, expanding opportunities and contributing to the nation’s growth across sectors. Our continued focus remains on empowering talent, encouraging research and creating solutions that serve both national progress and the aspirations of our people,” he added.
National Technology Day is observed every year on May 11 to commemorate India’s successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in Rajasthan in 1998.
The tests, collectively known as ‘Operation Shakti’, marked India’s entry into the group of nuclear-capable nations and established the country as the sixth member of the global “Nuclear Club”.
The operation was led by renowned aerospace scientist and former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. India conducted three underground nuclear tests on May 11, 1998, followed by two more on May 13, demonstrating its capability to develop both thermonuclear and fission weapons.
The day also marks other major technological milestones achieved in 1998, including the successful test flight of the indigenous Hansa-3 aircraft in Bengaluru and the successful test-firing of the Trishul surface-to-air missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Following these achievements, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 as National Technology Day in 1999 to honour India’s scientific community and celebrate the country’s technological advancements.
National Technology Day also recognises the contributions of scientists, engineers and innovators in driving India’s technological progress.
The occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of innovation and research in strengthening national development and inspiring future generations.
