New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted an early onset of southwest monsoon winds on Thursday, May 12, 2022. The Andaman and Nicobar islands are expected to receive the first seasonal showers on May 15, 2022.
“Southwest Monsoon is likely to advance into South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal around May 15, 2022,” the IMD said in a statement.
The development comes after prolonged heat waves adversely affected most parts of the country during April 2022. This year recorded the third warmest April in 122 years.
“Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall is very likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next five days,” the department further wrote.
The archipelago is likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall from May 14 to May 16, 2022.
“Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph was also likely over South Andaman Sea on May 15 and May 16,” the IMD added.
According to weather officials, forecasts also suggested favourable conditions for an early onset of monsoon over Kerala. The South-West monsoon winds strike the coastal state of Kerala on June 01 annually under normal circumstances.
