Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) and the Labour, Skill Development, and Employment Department decided to conduct English language classes for the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) students.

The Board also decided to conduct and simplify the English examination for ITI students of Gujarat.

The GSHSEB chairman AJ Shah said, “Students demanded to simplify the exam. So unlike all these years where students were required to register themselves to a school to take the class 12 English exam for the class 12 equivalent certificate, now the ITIs will directly register students with the board to conduct the exam. Since we have their details of class 10 exams and results, doing that will not be an issue.”

The Board conducts the class 12 English examination to procure a Class 12 equivalent certificate for ITI students. Only around 7000 students can receive equivalent certificates despite 1.5 lakh annual enrolments across 525 ITIs in the state.

The Labour, Skill Development and Employment Department Principal Secretary said, “With the process being simplified and cutting out schools from the process, we are expecting more students to take this exam so that they are eligible for undergraduate diploma courses where Class 12 is a mandate. It will help in their mainstreaming them.”

ITI students who completed two years can register and take examinations conducted annually in March. Fourth-semester ITI students can also appear for class 12 supplementary exams held annually in July. The Board will also conduct special English classes before the exam for those not taught the subject during their course.
