SAARC Diary: Modi to Inaugurate India-Bangladesh “Maitri Setu” on Tuesday

NEW DELHI, Mar 8: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will use a virtual platform to inaugurate the ‘Maitri Setu’ between India and Bangladesh on Tuesday March 9, 2021 at 12 p.m. During the event, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for a number of infrastructure projects in Tripura.

The ‘Maitri Setu’ bridge spans over the Feni River, which flows between the Indian and Bangladeshi borders in Tripura State. The name ‘Maitri Setu’ represents India and Bangladesh’s growing bilateral relations and friendly ties. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd was in charge of the construction which cost Rs. 133 crores. The 1.9-kilometre bridge connects Sabroom, India, and Ramgarh, Bangladesh. It has the potential to usher in a new age of trade and people-to-people movement between India and Bangladesh. With this inauguration, Tripura will become the “Gateway of the North East,” with access to Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port, which is just 80 kilometres from Sabroom.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement stated, the Prime Minister will also be inaugurating and laying foundation stones of few more domestic projects.
