New Delhi: A scientist at IIT-Kanpur has expressed concern about the ‘Omicron’ variant which has been reported in many countries including the US, Europe, and some Asian countries. Scientist Manindra Agarwal involved in the mathematical projection of trajectory of COVID-19 said that “The intensity of the third wave of coronavirus is likely to be lower than the deadly second wave.”
The IIT-Kanpur scientist suggested that India is likely to see the third wave of coronavirus and may report 1-1.5 lakh a day. India had reported more than 4 lakh COVID-19 cases in a day when the deadly second wave was at its peak in May.
According to a media report, Manindra Agarwal further added that “With the new variant, our current forecast is that the country could see the third wave by February but it will be milder than the second wave. So far we have seen that the severity of Omicron is not like the one seen in the Delta variant,”
However, South Africa, where the virus was first detected, has so far not reported a single case of hospitalization.
So far, India has reported 23 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus – ten in Maharashtra, nine in Rajasthan, two in Karnataka, one each in Delhi and Gujarat.
