New Delhi, August 2: British tennis legend Sir Andy Murray retired from professional tennis after a straight-set defeat in the ongoing Olympic Games 2024 in Paris, in men’s doubles quarter-finals held on Thursday, the media reported.

Andy, who partnered with his compatriot Dan Evans, lost 6-2,6-4 to American duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. Murray,37, had earlier confirmed that this year’s Olympics would be his final tournament before retiring from tennis.

“I knew that moment was coming for the last few months and if it didn’t happen today, that was going to be in a couple of days. I was ready for it,” he told reporters after the match. Murray has made five Olympic appearances and won gold medals twice – in London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro (2016).

Former world number 1, Murray started his professional tennis career in 2005, playing 1001 singles matches. He won 46 ATP titles including three Grand Slams. He also led Britain to a Davis Cup victory in 2015.
