New Delhi: The Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday announced that the historic city of Dhar has been selected under the Centre’s ‘Safe Cities’ project for 2026, aiming to strengthen women’s safety and urban security.

The development comes amid heightened political attention on women-focused policies, including the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam”.

According to an official statement from the Madhya Pradesh government, Dhar is among 10 cities chosen nationwide under the Ministry of Women and Child Development’s initiative, which is fully funded by the Central Government.

“An allocation of Rs 10 crore has been made for Dhar district under the project, which will be implemented for a minimum period of five years,” the Madhya Pradesh government said in a statement on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to make public spaces in Dhar safer and more accessible for women through infrastructure upgrades and enhanced surveillance.

“The plan includes installation of CCTV cameras at sensitive locations, improved street lighting, and better monitoring mechanisms across the city,” it added.

The government further stated the project will also focus on improving facilities in district hospitals and health centres, including dedicated waiting areas for women and their families. Public amenities such as ‘Pink Toilets’ and women-friendly facilities at tourist sites will also be a part of the project.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the programme will include awareness campaigns and training initiatives in Dhar to promote community sensitivity and support women’s empowerment, addressing both safety and social well-being.

Dhar, which holds significant historical and archaeological importance, is known for its cultural heritage and ancient legacy in central India.

The government said the development of specialised facilities for women tourists is expected to enhance its image as a safe and globally attractive destination.

The statement also noted that the district is undergoing rapid development, highlighted by the upcoming PM MITRA Park.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the mega textile park on September 17, 2025, a project expected to boost employment and industrial growth in the region.
