New Delhi: “We miss you and we wish you were back home to cut a cake with all of us,” wrote Karti in his two-page letter to his father P Chidambaram who is ‘celebrating’ his 74th birthday on Monday in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate his birthday on Tuesday.
“You are turning 74 today and no 56!!! can stop you” Karti remarked, apparently hinting at Modi’s “56-inches chest”.
“Although you have never been one for grand celebrations, and nowadays in the country, we seem to be making grand celebrations out of every little thing; your birthday is not the same without you with us. We miss you, your absence tugs at our hearts, and we wish you were back home to cut a cake with all of us,” Karti tweeted.
Karti informed his father of the various developments, from Chandrayaan-2 to Rafael Nadal at US open, since he was jailed on September 5 in the INX Media case.
The former Finance Minister had also asked Karti to tweet his message which read, “My thoughts today are about the economy. Just one statistic tells the story. Export growth in August was -6.05%. No country has achieved GDP growth of 8% without exports growing at 20% a year. May God bless this country”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, quoting Karti Chidambaram, tweeted, “Many happy returns of the day @PChidambaram_IN. There will be happier birthdays, I’m sure. Terrific letter, Karti. We stand with you in your quest for justice.”
Meanwhile, The Hindu Group Chairman N Ram said in Chennai on Sunday that a “monstrous injustice’ has been done to Chidambaram by sending him to jail despite the fact that there is no material evidence against him in the INX Media case, other than the statement of the “murder accused” (former INX Media owners Indrani and Peter Mukherjea).
“The only intention behind those who have orchestrated this arrest and unfortunately the highest courts of the land have fallen victim to this, to deny him liberty as long as possible. That’s the whole intention,” claimed Ram at a meeting of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) to condemn the arrest of the forme Finance Minister
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted birthday wishes to Chidambaram, calling it a “test by fire.” “Today PC turns 74. It is an agnipariksha he is going through but he will come out of it vindicated. I have worked very closely with him since 1986 and it has been a great privilege and education doing so. My thoughts are with him.”
