India starts shipping COVID-19 vaccines to Africa under the COVAX facility: MEA Spokesman

New Delhi: The government of India on Tuesday started the export of covid-19 vaccine to the African countries. Spokesmen of the Ministry of External Affairs – Anurag Srivastava on Wednesday said “India has started shipping COVID-19 vaccines to Africa under the COVAX facility.”

Srivastava said “it is commitment to help the world with COVID-19 vaccines.” The New Delhi government exported the coronavirus vaccine to more than 25 countries so far.

Srivastava on Tuesday tweeted that “India is fulfilling its commitment to help the world with COVID-19 vaccines. Last month, the MEA announced that India plans to supply one crore or 10 million vaccine doses to Africa and 10 lakh to United Nations health workers under GAVI’s COVAX facility.”

COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access, abbreviated as COVAX, is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines led by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the World Health Organisation, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and others.

India and Mauritius signed a free trade agreement on February 22 – along with five key pacts. This is the first such agreement with an African country. The agreement was signed during the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to the island nation.
