New Delhi: Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday inaugurated the renovated Nehru Place Post Office in New Delhi. He said the modernisation of India Post is a key step towards realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Scindia inaugurated the upgraded facility along with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.

Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister described India Post as one of the country’s most trusted institutions and said it continues to play a crucial role in financial inclusion, public service delivery and national connectivity.

Scindia said the Department of Posts is modernising its infrastructure, logistics network and customer services to meet evolving public needs and transform post offices into digitally enabled, citizen-friendly spaces.

Further, the minister noted that nearly Rs 5,000 crore has been invested in upgrading the department’s IT infrastructure and implementing Advanced Postal Technology over the past year. He added that reforms such as UPI-enabled services, OTP-based delivery, extended-hour post offices and guaranteed delivery services including 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post have been introduced across major cities.

Highlighting the scale of India Post’s operations, the minister said the department operates more than 1.65 lakh post offices nationwide, delivers nearly 90 crore letters and 7.5 crore parcels annually, and manages over 40 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts with deposits exceeding Rs 23 lakh crore.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing the gathering, expressed gratitude to the Department of Posts on behalf of the three crore residents of Delhi for selecting the national capital for the country’s first upgraded Post Office under the nationwide modernization initiative. She said that the renovation and rejuvenation of post offices reflect the Government’s strong commitment towards strengthening citizen-centric public infrastructure.

She added that India Post has evolved into a modern multi-service institution offering banking, Aadhaar, passport, insurance and digital services under one roof.

Minister of State Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said the department aims to transform India Post into a modern and citizen-centric institution while strengthening the spirit of “Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa”.

According to the Department of Posts, the Nehru Place Post Office has been redesigned under a Proof of Concept initiative being implemented across 40 post offices in 17 states.

The renovated facility has been upgraded as per a design manual developed by the School of Planning and Architecture in collaboration with the Department of Posts. The redesign includes modern waiting areas, modular counters, improved lighting, barrier-free access and digitally integrated service zones.

The department said 120 more post offices across the country have been identified for similar modernisation during the 2026-27 financial year.
