Hyderabad: More than 6,000 people performed Bhujangasana in unison at Kanha Shanti Vanam in Hyderabad on Saturday, setting an Asia record as part of a Yoga Mahotsav marking the 50-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.

The event, organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush, brought together participants from over 20 countries, reflecting the growing global reach of yoga. The mass performance entered the Asia Book of Records for the largest gathering performing the asana simultaneously.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy, addressing the gathering, said yoga was “not merely India’s ancient heritage but a priceless gift to humanity,” noting its widespread adoption by people across professions and countries.

He said yoga could play a key role in building a “healthy, peaceful, and disciplined society” as India works towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, adding that Hyderabad should emerge as a global hub for yoga and holistic wellness alongside its reputation in technology and innovation.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said yoga had evolved into a global movement for holistic well-being under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contributing to physical health, mental clarity and emotional balance. He added that yoga had strengthened India’s identity as a global centre for wellness and healthcare, while also supporting the growth of health tourism.

Highlighting the “Yoga 365” initiative, Jadhav said the campaign aims to encourage daily practice of yoga through a 100-day free training programme running until June 21, with a target of over 100,000 participants and certification as “Yog Mitra”.

He said the next Yoga Mahotsav, marking the 25-day countdown to IDY 2026, would be held in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.

The event was attended by officials and representatives from embassies, consulates and international organisations from countries including Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Bulgaria, Cuba, Namibia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Ayush, including Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, and other dignitaries were also present.

The programme featured a mass demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol led by MDNIY Director Kashinath Samagandi, followed by a Heartfulness meditation session. Cultural performances, including Natyayoga and a yoga fusion presentation by a Korean team, were also part of the event.

The International Day of Yoga 2026 will be observed on June 21
