Government appoints Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as next Chief of Naval Staff

New Delhi: The Government on Saturday appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff. He will succeed Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is scheduled to retire on May 31, 2026.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan, currently Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, will take over as the 26th Chief of the Naval Staff and the 34th to lead the Indian Navy since Independence.

A highly decorated officer with over 38 years of service, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. He is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare and has held several key operational, staff, and training assignments during his distinguished career.

He has commanded missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. On promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Southern Naval Command, Kochi, where he played a pivotal role in naval training. He was also instrumental in raising the Indian Naval Safety Team.

The officer later served as Flag Officer Sea Training, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, and Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group. On promotion to Vice Admiral, he held the appointments of Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services, Chief of Personnel, and most recently, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Joint Services Command and Staff College, UK, College of Naval Warfare, and the United States Naval War College. He holds a BSc from Jawaharlal Nehru University, MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, MPhil in Strategic Studies and PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University.

He is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

The appointment comes at a time when the Indian Navy is undergoing significant modernisation, with emphasis on indigenisation, maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region, and strengthening operational capabilities.
