NEW DELHI, July 14: San Rechal Gandhi, the 26-year-old model and former Miss Puducherry known for her outspoken stance against colourism in the Fashion Industry, allegedly committed suicide by consuming sleeping pills.
She had consumed excessive sleeping pills on July 5 and despite valiant efforts could not be saved by died at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on Saturday.
Rechal was known for breaking barriers in the fashion industry and advocating a strong stance against colourism and celebrating diversity. Rachel lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her Father, who supported her pursuing a modelling career. Defying industry biases around skin tone, Rechal emerged as a strong voice against colourism, earning recognition for challenging the dominance of ‘fair skin’ standards. Her journey was marked by titles that broke conventional barriers—including Miss Dark Queen Tamil Nadu in 2019, followed by Miss Puducherry in 2021.
She had also represented India in international modelling competitions in London, Germany, and France, establishing her career around the message of inclusivity and diversity. Apart from the modelling and fashion industry, Rechal also engaged in advocacy for women’s safety.
According to the police officials, Rachel had been battling depression. On 5 July, she allegedly overdosed on sleeping pills and was initially taken to hospital by her father to the Puducherry Government Hospital. Later, she was moved to a private hospital and later shifted to the JIPMER where she passed away.
Investigators Suspect an overwhelming financial stress and pressure pushed her to take this step. Officials revealed that Rechal had sold her Jewellery recently for funds for her Professional pursuits. She visited her father’s house seeking financial help but was allegedly turned away as he cited responsibilities towards her brother, as per Police officials.
A suicide note recovered by the police stated that no one was to be held responsible for her death. But in view of her recent marriage, the police has initiated an inquiry if any marital issues played any role in ending her life.
Her death has left many in the modelling and advocacy circles shocked, as she had become a symbol of defiance against long-held beauty prejudices.
