New Delhi, March 14: Former Ajax and Netherlands national team football player Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch prosecutors in a case of alleged drug trafficking. He has been sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for drug trafficking, according to the media reports.

A Dutch court said Promes had smuggled 1,350 kgs (2,976 pounds) of cocaine. In a statement, the Amsterdam public prosecutor’s office said: “The arrest was made based on a red notice issued by the Netherlands which will request the extradition of the man.”

Promes was reportedly staying in luxury in Dubai, according to the media reports. “He has been taken into custody thanks to the efforts of the authorities in both countries. At this time, it’s not possible to provide additional information to avoid disruption of the ongoing investigation,” the Amsterdam public prosecutor’s office said.

Last month, Quincy Promes was suspected by the Dutch court of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing cocaine. As a footballer, he played for several teams.
