New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on March 22 signed a special contract with Mahindra Defence Systems Limited (MDSL), in which MDSL will supply 1,300 Light Specialist Vehicles to the Indian Army.

Contract to the Mahindra Defence Systems Limited will boost the ‘Make in India’ campaign. The MoD signed a contract of Rs 1056 crore with MDSL in New Delhi. The induction of vehicles is planned to be completed in four years.

The Light Specialist Vehicle is a modern fighting vehicle and will be authorized to various fighting units for the carriage of Medium Machine Guns, Automatic Grenade Launchers as well as Anti-tank Guided Missiles.

The Light Specialist Vehicle is indigenously designed and developed by MDSL. These combat vehicles are extremely agile with all-round protection against small arms fire and will assist small independent detachments which are required to operate this weapon platform in the operational area.

Production of this kind of armed vehicle at home shows the potential and strength of India in Defence manufacturing sector. Production of the Light Specialist Vehicle in India – will another milestone to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’ and ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government.

It is important to note that the government of India has drastically reduced the import of weapons in the last few years. The New Delhi government is planning to manufacture all kind of weapons at home and want to convert India from arms importing country to arms exporting country.
